Sam Doucette

Groundskeeper/Crew Leader

Tell us a little about yourself… Where did you grow up? Hobbies? Family? How long have you worked here?

I am 34 and I grew up in Wells, Maine. This is my second year working for York Parks and Recreation. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and trivia with my best friend, Emma.

Where did you work before this job, and what led you to York Parks and Recreation?

My first job was on a farm, but most recently I worked at York Animal Hospital, which I still help per diem. I started with Parks and Recreation because I wanted more exposure to the outdoors and to be more involved in the community.

What part of your job would surprise most people?

The maintenance staff is relatively small, yet we maintain so many properties. Parks, schools, beaches, athletic fields, traffic islands, and many old cemeteries just to name a few.

What skill from a past job helps you the most with this one?

Farm work helped prepare me for working with equipment and tools, which is always work in progress. Working in management helped me learn great people skills and prioritization.

What’s the most interesting project you have worked on?

Anything related to maintaining Nubble Lighthouse. I’ve enjoyed learning how to maintain and improve athletic playing fields.

What do you like best about working for Parks and Recreation?

Being part of the town and community and keeping our properties in tip-top shape, not just for our citizens, but for both the first time and repeat visitor to York. I also enjoy working for a great team of people who care greatly for the community we work for.
