York Ocean Rescue
York Ocean Rescue serves as the town’s professional ocean lifeguard service under the Parks and Recreation Department, accredited by the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA). Each summer, our team of highly trained guards protects the thousands of residents and visitors who enjoy York’s beaches including Short Sands, Long Sands, and York Harbor Beach. Certified in USLA Ocean Rescue, Basic Lifesaving, and Advanced First Aid, our lifeguards maintain constant readiness to respond to the unique challenges of the Atlantic while fostering a safe and welcoming beach environment.
Our work extends far beyond rescues. York Ocean Rescue is built on prevention. We aim to educate the public, enforce beach ordinances, and take proactive actions that stop emergencies before they begin. From lifesaving interventions to everyday guidance, our guards are committed to safeguarding the community and ensuring that all who come to York’s beaches can enjoy the ocean with confidence and safety.

On duty
Our lifeguards are on duty every day during the summer from 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM, from mid-June to Labor Day. Come say hi!

Our team
Lead by Captain Ella Yentsch, our team is comprised of 2 Lieutenants and 14 Lifeguards dedicated to keeping York's beaches safe.
Our service
York Ocean Rescue staffs six lifeguard stands across three of York’s most popular beaches: Short Sands, Long Sands, and Harbor Beach. From these stands, our guards maintain constant surveillance of the shoreline, ready to respond to emergencies. Every lifeguard is trained to perform ocean rescues, administer first aid, provide emergency care, and assist with everything from lost children to ordinance enforcement. Our guards are also there to educate the public, offer safety information, and promote smart decisions around the ocean.
Beyond daily service, York Ocean Rescue also builds community through programming that highlights the value of ocean safety and fitness. These include initiatives such as the Lifeguard Run Club, which encourages active living, and the Surf Rescue Clinic, where the public can learn directly from our team about rescue techniques and beach safety.
There are no lifeguards on duty today. Swim at your own risk.
Check back during the 2026 season for daily updated tides and water temperature!
