Join Us in Celebrating York River Month!
Restoring a Native Landscape & Managing Invasive Plants at Goodrich Park
York Parks and Recreation, in partnership with the York Conservation Commission, is working to manage invasive plants and restore native habitat at Goodrich Park.
Following recommendations from the 2024 Invasive Plant Control Practice Plan, the project has begun with approximately 5 acres surrounding the Grant House. Management strategies include a combination of mechanical and hand removal, monitoring, and carefully targeted herbicide treatment when needed to control invasive plants and encourage native biodiversity.
The project is supported in part by a York River Watershed Grant, funded through the National Park Service Partnership Wild and Scenic Rivers Program.
Our long-term goal is to restore a healthier native landscape while creating a demonstration site where the community can learn about invasive plant management and environmental stewardship.

Learning & Volunteer Opportunities
Friday, September 11th and Friday, September 18th:
9-9:30am- Get to know scenic Goodrich Park and learn to identify some of the common native and non-native/invasive plant species found on site ahead of the workday.
9:30am-noon- Please join us for a morning of invasive plant removal at Goodrich Park. Help us restore native biodiversity by cutting and hauling invasive plant material to be chipped. No experience necessary! Must be able to walk in uneven terrain.
Please bring: refillable water bottle, snacks, sturdy close-toed shoes, light-colored clothing, long pants, long socks, long sleeves, and gloves if you have them.
Provided: work gloves, insect repellent, sunscreen, water refills, and work tools.
PLEASE BE AWARE THAT POISON IVY AND TICKS ARE PREVELENT.

Information Sessions and Tours Friday, September 25th:
10am-noon- Guided Walks and Information Session on Invasive Plants at Goodrich Park: learn about this ongoing multi-year invasive plant management project from York Parks and Recreation Department and York Conservation Commission. PLUS- learn about aquatic invasive plant monitoring and receive a free suspicious plant ID and reporting kit from York County Soil & Water Conservation District!
No registration is required for this event.
